of Lucid Dreaming - Part 2
Staring at your hands
This is a very popular way to reach the lucid state. Simply
stare at your hands and with practice, you will notice that
the moment you look at your hands, it is a dream. The best way
to do this is to consciously look at your hands during the day
and wonder whether it is a dream or not. If you do this
exercise regularly, you will see your hands during your dreams
too. Then you know that you are dreaming.
Increasing fluid intake
To start with, drink plenty of fluid just before going to bed
which will necessitate visiting the bathroom at least once
during midnight. Before you fall asleep think that you are
either in a bathroom or searching for one. In all likelihood,
you will either have a dream that you are in a bathroom or
looking for one. It is here that it will dawn on you that you
are actually dreaming. Here is a word of caution though: your
thoughts could be so realistic that you will believe you are
in the bathroom relieving yourself. This means there are
chances of wetting your bed!
Where am I and how did I get here?
During the day, when you are wide awake, keep on asking
yourself the question where you are and how did you get there.
Then retrace your steps and get to realize how you got where
are right now. if you constantly seek answer to this question,
chances are that you will have it recur in your dreams too.
Then, you will not be able to remember how you came to your
present position, or what brought you here. Now, have you
realized that you were actually dreaming? There was an
occasion, not long ago, when I dreamt that I was standing on
top of a building, but could not decipher how I reached the
peak. Gradually I became certain that I was dreaming. So I
took the most convenient route out of the situation. I simply
flew away.
Foods which help reach the lucid state:
Here are some foods which could be called lucid nutrition as
they help you reach the lucid state successfully:
* Orange juice: Orange or any other fresh fruit juice keeps
your central nervous system active while putting your muscles
to sleep. This can help in having more memorable and vivid
dreams as well as change the course of a lucid dream.
* Milk and Cheese: Melatonin is a kind of neurotransmitter
which is associated with sleep and dreaming. Milk and cheese
are foods which stimulate the production of melatonin. Hence a
glass of warm milk just before going to bed can help you have
lucid dreams.
* Lettuce: According to a Mirror traveler, lettuce is
excellent for inducing dreams which are either memorable or
the herb could help in remembering the dreams later. Though
the writer was not too familiar with the different types of
lucid dreams or how to have them, he had two friends who
reported its efficacy and he tried on three occasions. With
lettuce, he succeeded three times.
* Mustard and pickles: According to another Mirror traveler
having a tablespoon of mustard along with a medium sized dill
pickle just before going to bed can help in induction of lucid
dreams. This person heard about this via radio broadcast,
where a dream researcher had tried this recipe. After he
achieved success with this recipe three times in a row he now
does this once or twice a week. Though he can not remember the
name of the researcher or from where he came, he finds this a
good way to have lucid dreams. His friends have also tasted
success with this recipe at times. For the writer though,
being successful a few times is better than not having lucid
dreams at all.
* Ice Cream: Though the exact mechanism of action is
attributed to the amino acids or the cool temperature which
increases the overall arousal level, having a couple of
dollops of ice cream is known to induce lucid dreams.
* Popcorn: Heaven knows how this food can induce lucid dreams,
but it works on many people.
* Fish: Perhaps the protein which fish contains, this food for
some is a strong lucid dream inducer.
How to remain lucid
Though after many trials you start to realize that you are
dreaming, it might be difficult to remain in the lucid state
for too long. Here are some tips and techniques to help you
stay lucid:
* Remain calm: Keep cool and stay tranquil. If you are too
excited, you might wake up immediately after you have realized
that you are dreaming.
* Spinning: Go on turning around on your own axis, without
feeling dizzy. While doing this, go on uttering to yourself
that the next scene would be a dream. When you have ceased to
spin, you are obviously in a dream state. In fact even when
you start to think that you are wide awake, you are actually
still dreaming!
* Stare at your hands or the ground: Try and locate a
reference point in your dream, and focus on the point which
could be your hands or a point on the ground. The focusing
could add stability to your dream.
* Rub your hands together: When you rub your hands together,
it gives you a feeling of mobility as well as friction. As you
go on rubbing your hands, go on telling yourself that the next
scene ought to be a dream.
According to research the most effective technique is the
spinning technique followed by hand rubbing. |
