Understanding
Lucid Dreaming - Part 2
While physicists do their research in laboratories consisting
of purely physical phenomena, Buddhist yoga maestros master
the discipline of dream yoga to understand the mind and their
laboratories would consist of only different states of
consciousness. If you are also interested in such practices,
start with the recognition of your dream state while still
dreaming. Lucid dreams in the initial stages, last for a short
time. In fact one usually wakes up quickly from such reveries.
But with practice and a strong will you can learn to calm and
stabilize the mind to sustain this lucid dream state for
longer duration of time. This can then open up many
possibilities of exploring deeper into the dream state.
Have you ever wondered if anyone can change the contents of a
dream according to one’s will? Buddhist contemplators believe
that the contents of a dream can be changed and the
restrictions can only be posed by one’s own limited
creativity. Additionally, the more you go deeper into the
study of lucid dreams, you will realize that there is hardly
any content in a dream which can bring harm to anyone. Every
event and situation that comes up in dreams is the creation of
your own mind. Even the most terrifying images that you see in
your dreams are no more harmful than what you would see as a
reflection in your dressing mirror.
Another aspect of practicing dream yoga is to allow the dream
to fade, without losing your sense of awareness. You must be
completely aware that you are purposefully letting the dream
vanish. Since during the dream state all the physical senses
are asleep, when you allow the dream to fade, it actually
disappears into the realm of your awareness itself. This will
open up a unique opportunity to experience the ‘clear light of
sleep’ when you can actually sense your consciousness without
the burden of sensory images and other layers of conceptual
notes. This is the way you can become more aware of your own
consciousness and see for yourself how your mind calms when
all your physical senses and cognitive abilities are aroused.
Modern theoreticians and researches draw a fine line of
distinction between the waking and dream state. This fine line
of demarcation is extremely important in the induction of
lucid dreaming. Interestingly, these two states have more
similarities than is expected. According to Stephen LaBerge:
“Dreaming can be viewed as a special case of perception
without any constraint of external sensory inputs. Conversely,
perception can be viewed as the special case of dreaming
constrained by sensory input.” The similarities of the dream
and wakeful states have been studied by Tibetan Buddhists who
conclude that unlike spiritually enlightened people, normal
people go on living their lives in a dream-like state.
When Lord Buddha was asked whether he is man or God, you are
likely to hear a reply: “I am awake”. That is the precise
meaning of the word “Buddha’: “One who has awakened.” |
